Busbee’s 6th graders are getting to know University of South Carolina student-athletes through a letter-writing project.

Gamecock student-athletes volunteer at Busbee throughout the year, mentoring and spending time with our students and helping with activities around the school. The letters are another way for our students to connect with them and learn more about college, sports, and life as a student-athlete.

Recently, the Gamecock athletes wrote letters to our 6th graders sharing a little about themselves. Our students were excited to write back and ask questions to learn even more about their new Gamecock friends.

Several students quickly discovered things they had in common with their athletes. 

• Cameron learned about the Gamecock Equestrian team and thought it was cool because he likes horses too.

• Bianca discovered that she and her athlete share an interest in volleyball. Her athlete plays beach volleyball, which gave Bianca something new to learn about.

• Ireona was excited to find out that her athlete is a track star because she hopes to run track when she gets to high school.

• Carter and Bianca also learned that their athletes are from different countries, giving them a chance to ask questions and learn about places and experiences outside of their own community.

The letter exchange gives our students a real reason to write, ask questions, and learn about someone new. Even better, it builds on the relationships the Gamecock student-athletes are already creating through their volunteer work at Busbee.

Our 6th graders are looking forward to hearing back and learning more about their athlete pen pal.
