Practice Journal 11/12-11/13

Good morning. I hope that you all had an opportunity to rest and recharge. You will notice that the Practice Journal assignment now spans more than one day. The Practice Journal will be something to complete throughout each week. The benefit here is that for now, it won't require a parent signature. There will be ways I will have built in for me to see that you are doing the assignment as you are needed to.
Please also take note of the due dates. These will be due at the end of each week from now until the end of the school year. We will be moving the check-in portion of the online experience back into the classroom.
I will be updating the format of this assignment until I am pleased that it is doing what it needs to do.

10/16/20 (A Day) and 10/19/20 (B Day) Assignment in Google Classroom

10/16/20 (A Day) and 10/19/20 (B Day) Assignment

Good morning everybody. I apologize for the delay in getting this posted but I could not get these videos to upload and transfer correctly. This assignment should not take more than 20 minutes.
Please do the following:
1. Please view the videos on fingerboard mapping for your specific instrument.
2. IF you do not have your instrument, please view the video on what to do if you have no instrument. It is literally titled "whatifnoinstrument". Sorry for not having spaces there but as many of you may know, when you give a file a title on the computer, the computer has an easier time processing and filing that item. When you allow spaces then it actually can create small fragments in your computers memory and causes it to slow down just slightly. Over time that adds up to a lot of lost processing power.
3. Make your own video of you mapping your fingerboard.
4. BE NICE TO YOUR PEERS. Please do not post any negative, defamatory, or hurtful messages. Remember, you need to work with these people for quite some time and you never know who could help you in the future.

4. SEA AGRADABLE CON TUS COMPAÑEROS. No publique ningún mensaje negativo, difamatorio o hiriente. Recuerde, necesita trabajar con estas personas durante bastante tiempo y nunca se sabe quién podría ayudarlo en el futuro.

3. Please complete the Adaptive Pitch Assessment at least three times.
4. Post your percentile score and the Hz score on the Google Form I have placed below.
*This assessment is designed to be difficult. Therefore, if you do not do well it will not negatively impact your grade. You will earn your credit regardless of how well or poorly you do. This just gives me some baseline data to work with as we learn to develop our ears.
Once you have completed these items, enjoy the day.

You playing or Supplies 9/23/20

Good morning everybody. Those of you who have instruments in my class, will have already been emailed a playing assignment for today. Your playing assignments will be due Friday. Those individuals have also been requested to provide videos of their playing their assignments. This is where those videos will be posted.
Those of you who do not have your instruments, you can still do somethings for me. You can show me how to set up your bow hand shape with a pencil. Therefore, you will record yourself setting up your bow hand shape just like you can see me doing in the videos that I have already posted. Once you have done that, then you will also submit your video here. Another thing you will need to do is purchase a copy of the book Essential Elements for Strings book 1. You will need to purchase it for your specific instrument. Once you have purchased it please either submit a receipt to me or a picture of you with your book once you have it.

A Day Virtual Students 9/18/20 in Google Classroom

A Day Virtual Students 9/18/20

Good morning everybody. I am back on track. Today we are going to be listening some more but with a bit of a twist. Today you will need to do the following:
1. Complete the daily check in.
2. Complete the listening journal.
3. Upload a video of you either clapping, tapping, or using an instrument to play the rhythms from the melody of one of your favorite songs.
What is the melody you might ask? It is the main idea or theme of a piece of music. Sometimes it is a series of very short repeated patterns called a motive. Sometimes it is rather longer such as well enter just about any love song you can think of. The one that springs to mind right now is, "My Heart Will Go On" as performed by Celine Dion. Please also be on the lookout in the near future for a checklist from me of things you need to do daily to be successful in playing your instrument and in my class.
Go forth and be awesome! :)

Assignment for all A Day Virtual Students 9/11/20 in Google Classroom

Assignment for all A Day Virtual Students 9/11/20

As we pause to remember the events of 9/11 I am struck by a thought. That is a need to slow down and reflect. You may be saying to yourselves, "But Mr. Rogers, that is something we have had waaay to much time to do lately with COVID-19." I get it but let us never forget the value of such things. With that said, your assignment is to do the following:
1. Think of one place that you can safely be outside to listen.
*If no place outside is a place you feel comfortable, find a place inside.
2. Get a notepad, pencil, and something to listen to music with.
3. Go to the safe spot and listen for 2 minutes without your music.
4. Write down what you hear as long as it is school appropriate.
5. Put your headphones on and listen for 5 minutes.
6. Tell me what music you listened to, who it was written by, and why you like it.
7. If you want to doodle about what you hear today please feel free to share that with me also.

Getting Started in Google Classroom

Getting Started

With this year being completely unique the potential is high for us as learners to make no progress on our instruments. The potential is just as high, if not higher, for us to make tremendous progress and for you to be very proud of what you have been able to accomplish. To do this we will move our instruction away from large group instruction and shift to a more individualized focus of instruction. With this in mind I need you to fill out the Google Form and let me know about some of your interests in Music. I will look at this form and assessment data to help me tailor your instruction.
